Calculus or Data Science?
It's a dumb question based on a false dichotomy. The correct answer is "Yes!" Of course, really the correct answer is "Yes, but it depends with what the students wants/needs to learn for their goals."
I recently came across the following really insightful quote from a guy that really knows what he is talking about
"In other words, if your argument for calculus not being a topic worth teaching is that most students will never need it, but even if they do, a computer will be used anyway, the same can be said for most of the much hyped low level data science skills everyone is now so fond of. Moreover, and somewhat ironically, if you give LLMs data science tasks that involve off the beaten path optimization, so calculus really, they often have no idea what to do or just get the answer wrong. I know this because I have asked LLMs precisely these sorts of questions. "
Of course, I am just quoting myself from my latest book.
